Today they announced that they’re organizing a 6-month mentorship for two new restaurant writers from global majority and/or working-class backgrounds. “This mentorship is open to all unpublished and early-career restaurant writers: it will aim to help develop their practice, publish their work and give them the chance to write both short- and long-form pieces about topics they feel aren’t currently being adequately covered in food media.” Incredible. While we’re on the topic, Eater is hiring a senior editor, The New York Times is also hiring a senior cooking editor, and, if you want to go there, Bon Appetit is hiring a visuals editor.
One of my writers tipped me off to the new Rhode store location. It’s on Greene, right below Houston. They’re opening from June 24th through July 3rd, from 11am-7pm daily. Probably smart not to do a full-year lease. Also this block is sleeeepppyyy, so it’s just begging for undisturbed lines wrapping around the block.

Brain Dead’s founder just revealed a teaser for a collab with Brooks Brothers. This is actually how I would describe my personal style – Brain Dead meets finance dad. This is the first brand from the “streetwear” space to ever collaborate with Brooks Brothers since Supreme in 2014. Maybe the streetwear brands are getting a littttllle nervous about the return of finance guy style.
There is so little excellent hotel writing on the internet, that when I open a story like this, my mouth just waters. I can’t wait to one day be in a tax bracket that makes looking at these enormous hotels in Paris less painful.

News from the Vox audio world: Sue Bird and Megan Rapinoe are partnering with Vox Media to bring back A Touch More Live, the podcast they piloted as an Instagram Live series in the early months of the pandemic.
The yoga surf girl summer aesthetic has always existed. But we, as a society, always try to further define it with words like “aspirational homesteader” or “boho” or “folky” but I will die on the hill that the vibe is just… yoga surf girl, a classic character on both coasts. FT published a story this week announcing that boho-chic jewelry (“beads, turquoise and bangles”) is back. WSJ published a story that long white skirts from brands like Doen and the Row will be everywhere this summer. And back in March, Vogue identified a building wave towards a boho renaissance after the Chloe show (I went to Jenna Perry the day after this show for a hair appointment and three women were discussing what they’d be ordering from the runway). But all in all, I think this is just your typical slow summer news headline. There will be women who wear leather mini skirts in the summer, there will be women who wear flowy farm skirts, and there will be women who wear both.
Pop music is so good right now. I’d put money on Sabrina and Chappell’s careers if I could.

Someone emailed me asking why all the hot girls are posting with guns. I cannot answer this with total confidence because the range of these photos is wide – Lana literally has her finger on a semi-automatic glock in a residential hotel room (which you need a license for), and the rest are clearly for target practice. Gun photos…. Man, I could talk about this format for a while. One wrong aesthetic decision, and the photo can immediately go from sport to pick-me (none of these are pick-me, I’d never cross these aesthetic experts). I posted a photo with a gun once. My ex from college went to school in Richmond and on Valentine’s Day we went to a shooting range.

Business of Home recently reported that Athena Calderone and Justina Blakeny of The Jungalow both decided to close their (somewhat new) e-commerce businesses. I just listened to this TikTok of brand licensing agent Julie Turkel (thank you to one of my readers for sending this over). She breaks down the difference between licensing your brand and starting an ecommerce business. With licensing, you essentially can lease your name to another brand, and get a percentage of sales. With e-commerce, you create and own the entire company underneath your own brand — but you have to put up a lot more money upfront for inventory. This is something I’d like to dig into more because a LOT of influencers in the fashion industry have been doing these “drops” with larger brands, which are just curated collections that they’re being paid to assemble and push. For influencers who aren’t trying to learn patternmaking and design, these types of collaborations (like Serena Kerrigan x Dynamite Clothing or Ella Rose x Nakd Fashion) can be an interesting test of their business savvy. With a traditional clothing ad on Instagram, you post the photo, you get the check. With something like a collection where you’re measuring how many SKUs you’re moving, you post that these products have launched… and then you post again, and again, and again to sell the mini brand you’ve created. If you’re not good at manufacturing and supply chain, you shouldn’t do it (Athena and Justina, case in point) – but I’m excited to see how industries outside of fashion continue to lean on bigger names to create smaller sub brands to push sales.
Business and Pleasure co. teamed up with Staud for beach umbrellas. And if I had $1200 to spare, I’d get one. I sense some more home collaborations with higher end fashion brands on the horizon…
