Bemelmans Bar opening in Aspen can only mean one thing.
There’s about to be a spike in ski trip hangovers and hookups.
Last night I met
who writes on Substack. He had two Old Fashioneds, I had two white Negronis, and everything we discussed is now in a vault. But go subscribe to him, he rocks. Maybe we’ll get him on a Guest Lecture this year.I’m planning on being in D.C. the weekend/week of Inauguration Day. I’m going to look at hotels today, but if there’s someone who wants to meet for lunch or coffee let me know. If there’s a way to navigate that city without feeling absolutely haunted and bored, let me know that as well.
Dirt had me on an episode of their podcast, Tasteland yesterday. My biggest piece advice on the show was to get a life.
Alex Cooper is getting into M&A. Cooper’s The Unwell Network is acquiring the podcasts Going West and Cheers. Prior to this, all of Unwell’s new podcasts we’re developed under the production company — this is the first time they’ve brought in existing shows.
Patrick Shaw-Kitch, a former baker from Blue Hill at Stone Barns is opening a grain mill in Gowanus. I was at lunch with
the other day, and she was explaining to our friends that once the Gowanus waterfront is fully developed (the neighborhood is historically known for its industrial past), and new retail begins to open over there, the area will probably get 1. More new restaurants (that use Patrick Shaw-Kitch’s flour), and 2. More people inviting you to get on the F/G to visit them. “If you go to the Union Square Greenmarket,” Shaw-Kitch says, “you’ll see five different types of radicchio” and be able to distinguish between a Castelfranco and a Tardivo. “My hope is that this will start happening with grain — a recognition of character.”Brilliant use of a billboard. Julia Fox plays a realtor in Steven Soderbergh’s new movie, Presence.
I never thought I’d see the day when Bemelmans Bar would open a pop-up in Aspen. So many hookups with people who you won’t see until next winter (by that time they’ll probably be engaged) are about to happen at that bar. Reminder that you don’t have to follow your mountain hookup on Instagram.
André Balazs’ Hudson Valley hotel, Habitas, has closed. “The hotel allegedly owed more than $300,000 in rent and late fees, plus $1.3 million for failed upgrades agreed to in the property lease.” They barely did any marketing, so I’m not surprised. I had the worst work offsite of my life there, good riddance.
Ken Griffin is tightening Citadel’s golden handcuffs on employees. Citadel prolonged its non-compete agreements for some portfolio managers to 21 months — other firms are closer to 12 months. This doesn’t necessarily help retain employees (a perk), it stops people from leaving.
I’m interested in the single-item bakeries that are opening in the East Village. It’s a great concept. Mary O’s is a new Irish soda bread shop, and now a cinnamon roll shop called Sunday Morning is opening. I need to go with
next time she’s in town.Last night, we discussed Sweetgreen coming out as being RFK-pilled in the Feed Me chat:
Sending an immense amount of love to anyone who has been affected by the California wildfires.
Ok I've never been to Bemelmans so nothing against them but why can't Aspen be Aspen and NYC be NYC? The unique character of a place >>> dumbed down carbon copy experiences. Especially ski towns!
I'm obsessed with the idea of single-item bakeries now.
