Ok I've never been to Bemelmans so nothing against them but why can't Aspen be Aspen and NYC be NYC? The unique character of a place >>> dumbed down carbon copy experiences. Especially ski towns!

wish i could double heart this. even a person or couple doing an "annual party" w/the same theme gets lame the 2nd year

I'm obsessed with the idea of single-item bakeries now.

Me too it’s genius. I guess the cupcake places sort of did it first

It's been happening forever, its just being yassified now. When I was a kid, David's Cookies in the mall, Cinnabon, etc.

I think it’s the opposite of yassified hahah it’s like more authentic and neighborhood-y

Ok so I don’t love the single-item bakery trend. It’s been going on for a few years in Europe (in Paris especially) and it’s getting super tacky and repetitive (we have babka-only, cookies-only, panettone-only, financier-only, flan-only etc etc bakeries and the list goes on). Most of these spots focus on going viral vs producing quality baked goods. Hopefully this won’t happen in NYC and quality will remain high.

Fwiw, I would love it if someone - anyone - could make sour cream glazed old fashioned cake donuts this side of the Atlantic. Would fully support THAT single-item concept! (If done well)

I’m with you babes, should we open a 1:1 Peter Pan dupe in London??? 🩷

damn, bemelman's full on embracing post-december 2021 TikTok blowup. they just need their own capsule collection separate from the Carlyle one to wrap a bow on it. will need to line up at 2pm soon.

I’m sure merch will be involved. It’s sort of odd that they recreated the wallpaper

Yeah. Silly move. Clearly they’re trying to become an icon or whatever the word is outside of nyc. All this does is help them become a hotel bar that’s 98% tourists.

downtown dc’s vibe will be notoriously bad and trafficky. If you hang out in residential neighborhoods where normal people live and you’re down to walk you’ll be fine.

Expand full comment

Yeah you're going to either have to stay within the perimeter and not leave it or remain outside the perimeter, but manage expectations for being able to navigate in and out (not sure why you're coming, but notoriously bad weekend to visit!)

Everyone I know is either leaning into the haunted vibe, hunkering down, or getting out of the city that weekend. But for a cozy drink, my go to’s that are relatively easy to get to from the monuments but out of tourist areas would be Green Zone and Medina

As you should! No judgement. I just wasn't sure if you were coming for a friend's birthday that happened to fall on inauguration weekend, in which case stay away from downtown! But if you're here for inauguration spectacle, certainly stay & hang out within the perimeter! It'll be an experience, for sure.

Relatedly, have you ever considered having a politics guest contributor or Q&A?

I live nearby and am astounded at the level and speed of development but should we be worried about the Erin Brockovich of it all? I am.

I am bewildered by the idea of a “viral Irish soda bread” bakery — soda bread is literally the easiest form of bread to make at home. A dog could do it.

Can a Celtic person confirm if this is some kind of twisted joke?

This place is near the end of my Sunday morning circuit, often a surprisingly high concentration of Irish people in there. The bread is a vehicle for butter and jam + hot spiced cider when you can see your breath is a treat. She initially got attention during COVID for her pub on A being closed down, but think this second wave is the usual IG Reels/TikTok “you have to try this [item]” suspects. Maybe not worth going out of your way, but a hell of a lot better than another “gourmet deli” or smoke shop in that neighborhood.

A single item bakery comes with a lot of risk, I would think, even more so than a general bakery. That said, I'm excited to see some of them because usually, if they are willing to live or die on one thing, it's pretty damned good. Also excited to see what will be happening in Gowanus!
