Kyla Scanlon has an interesting take on the port strikes and their greater influence on AI and automation. I would recommend a read if you want to dig deeper: https://substack.com/inbox/post/149702652.

Also, toilet paper is produced domestically, so stop fucking panic buying and buy a bidet.

I love Anonymous Transit Reporter’s takes. My day job is for a manufacturer and we import some components from Europe…our lumber suppliers import some of the wood we use from equatorial west Africa as well. next few weeks should be fun. But solidarity with the longshoremen.

Emily I would love your take on the job market and if you were a recent grad looking for a job, what kind of strategies would you use to get one? It's hard out here.

I really like the Words of Mouth newsletter — they have great listings. I’ve been thinking of doing a networking event but it’s a lot of work. I have a bias towards prioritizing money — get a job at a bar or restaurant (if you’re in a city this is also a great way to meet ppl) or somewhere else that could offer you insurance. Where are you based?

re: housing

I'd guess more than 75% of this readership votes dem which is the party of regulation. Every major city is run by dems, like nyc, and they can't get out of their own way. Their "affordable housing" initiatives do the exact opposite of their intention. Just gtfo of the way and investors will build rental housing. real estate taxes rising are passed onto renters and regulations are killing supply. if you care about this stuff vote like it.

I think the Sofie Pavitt WB location is actually just their corporate office. Unless anyone knows otherwise? (Hoping I’m wrong)

That New Yorker article was so depressing... the boy who was getting videos telling him to jump in front of a train?? Also not to pivot the blame but no mention of gun control really when most of the deaths were induced by guns bought for them as teenagers/belonging to parents. It all reminded me of a friend who works at a highly prestigious nyc prep school, whose students were surveyed on suicidal ideation and the numbers were truly shocking.

I always love with anonymous transit reporter shows up! The takes are excellent, supported by data, and really compelling.

As far as housing I’m not sure why no one is running on a platform that limits private equity ownership of single family homes. I’m not sure what it’s like in nyc but PE firms coming in and buying entry level (250-500k) homes with cash using their corporate credit facility is fucking ghoul behavior and has totally evaporated the first time home buyer inventory. I see it in Nashville where the availability of anything below $500k within city limits is nonexistent.
