My go-to app to track restaurants I want to try / ranking restaurants I’ve eaten at / seeing where friends eat & how they rank places. It’s got similar map functionality and recommendations to what the Infatuation app used to be like
I previewed the beta for the eater app and Beli is still head and shoulders above. Beli feels more personal. Also love that the founders are turning down VCs left and right. I predict AmEx buys them in 5-10 years like they did with infatuation
Affordable affluence, what a good term. Considering the average person can afford the newest iPhone, a giant flat screen tv, and fancy groceries but can’t afford a home it’s amazing that luxury has become accessible but necessities have become unattainable.
Lifelong DC resident who will gladly play tour guide and have martinis at The Riggs, Cucina Morini, or Cafe Milano/Martin’s tavern (the last rec is solely for the bit)
also, I feel like there’s a story up your alley in how DC has become a market for a lot of sceney restaurant groups. We’ve gotten a ton of starr group restaurants and Nancy Silverton is opening a massive Mozza. Feels like we’re 2 years out from getting a carbone lol
Emily, please don't just go to Le Diplomate if you visit! 🥴
Check out Tom Sietsema's recently published 40 best restaurants, where, yes, you'll find "Le Dip" but many other incredible restaurants in town. My favorite Italian places in town are Centrolina, Red Hen, and L'Ardente and for French, head to Lutece, or their sister restaurant Pascual for Mexican! https://www.washingtonpost.com/food/interactive/2024/best-dc-restaurants/?itid=ap_tomsietsema
If you're willing to venture into the suburbs, Thompson Italian in Old Town Alexandria does an olive oil martini & a cacio e pepe gimlet - both delicious! https://thompsonitalian.com/alexandria/
Which of your newsletters spoke about chick filet and other companies getting into film/music? I can’t remember and I would like to read about it. Thanks!
I hope you will make time for the new Impressionists exhibition at the National Gallery when you are in DC, https://www.nga.gov/exhibitions/2024/paris-1874-impressionist-moment.html. It's the same show that was at the Musée d'Orsay earlier this year.
Wonder how much the Eater app will try to replicate what Beli has done?
I don’t even know what Beli is. what is it?

FWIW trying to download Eater’s app and it appears there’s a glitch

Feel like it is quite popular with the 20 somethings

But seriously I have my ear to the ground re: some federal employees are doing things like putting off buying homes bc they're worried that a Trump win + Project 2025 shit means they could be fired. Some chat about that here: https://www.reddit.com/r/washingtondc/comments/1ds9wtp/if_trump_is_elected_an_enacts_project_2025_how_do/
is Eater trying to compete (kill) the Beli App?
Edit: someone beat me to this comment. Emily - Beli founder Judy could be an interesting guest lecture.
