I would love to live in Zucktown and get a lobotomy and drink Soylent. But I will continue to wake up each day, be brave, order takeout, and live in Park Slope.
I’m glad you guys liked the BLACK BOOK yesterday! We had a few late responses that I’d like to share with you:
DR. CHANEVE JEANNITON, who is actually my derm and the founder of epi.logic skincare: Thanks so much for thinking of me - this is such a fun topic. It takes a village to keep me put together. Here are my favorites:
Minami at Vanity Projects for nail art: She can literally do anything. It's insane. I love doing 3D nail art with her. We've done a cracked egg and oversized anthurium.
Helena Koudou for braids: Helena has really gentle hands and is so creative. I love letting her do her thing with freestyle braids.
Shelby Samaria for haircuts: Shelby's a wizard at the curly cut. I love working with her because not only is she trying to give you the best cut for where your hair is at, but she's also plotting how it'll grow out and strategizing your next cut. [Emily note: Shelby gave me a sick cut and bangs once, co-sign)
Jeremy Fisher: Jeremy's my powerlifting coach and strikes the perfect balance between being encouraging and challenging.
Pilates: I'm a Pilates girlie now. I divide my time between Fort Pilates and doing private sessions with Jo Martinez at her reformer studio Greenroom.
Joshua Beeler: I get lash line enhancement once a year and it's probably my fave beauty treatment. It makes your lashes look thicker, darker and fuller without having anything on. The best way to describe it is the look of your lashes in the morning if you haven't gotten all your mascara and eyeliner off the night before.
Injectables: I do my own Botox and filler treatments. :)
ANNIE KRIEGHBAUM, host of Eyewitness Beauty: A custom facial Raquel New York -- previously Joanna Czech's lead facialist in NYC, Raquel recently opened her own studio and offers her facials by timed increments, from 1hr 15mins for $500 up to her completely replacing your face over the course of 3hrs 15mins for $1,350. She has the best treatment beds and linens I've encountered.
HARRY HILL, “nostalgic gay guy with a huge terrace” according to Instagram: The Aufguss sauna session at Bathhouse. Ever wanted an almost-naked man to wave essential oils at you in a hot, dark room? It’s one of those experiences that I truly didn’t know I wanted (or needed) until I attended my first aufguss session at Bathhouse. The literal Williamsburg watering hole is worth visiting on its own, but please plan to attend one of the aufguss sessions, where a sauna master will place oil-infused snowballs (yes, snowballs) over a bed of hot rocks and then waft air at you with a little dance. Since phones are not allowed inside, you’ll have to tell your friends about it, not show them. Don’t worry, you’ll have a glow to back up your wild Aufgussian tales.
Some news:
The high costs for IVF and egg freezing treatments have created a black market. I know some women who have decided to do fertility treatments outside of the country, and I actually think it would be genius for someone to create an IVF and egg freezing retreat somewhere because it’s a pretty uncomfortable process. I’m sure doing it in the sun while drinking a pina colada would be quite nice. Free idea, for whoever wants that one. Insurance in the US covers some patient’s fertility treatment, and some women are giving away their extra unused drugs — they’re very expensive without insurance. On Instagram, patients use hashtags to covertly signal they have fertility drugs for offer, or that they are in need. On Facebook, Listservs and Discord groups, people swap (and sometimes sell) leftover medications. As more women postpone having children until later in life, infertility has become a growing problem, with the World Health Organization estimating that about one in six people globally are now impacted. The global fertility market was worth about $35.2 billion last year and is expected to grow to $84 billion by 2028, according to market research firm Imarc. In the US, procedures like IVF and egg freezing have steadily risen each year save for a dip during the Covid lockdowns of 2020. Procedures rose more than 26% in 2021, the most recent year available.
New York Magazine launched another newsletter. “In this relaunched version of The Listings Edit, I’ll bravely take to Streeteasy, Craigslist, and Zillow and wade through 365 pages or so of listings. Every Thursday, we’ll debate whether an apartment’s proximity to Fort Greene Park makes it worth ignoring its leaky, drafty bay window, or if anyone even uses the golf simulator on the 23rd floor of that amenities building — so that if you’re moving, you can make an educated choice.” This brings the magazine’s newsletter total to 36. I hope everyone working at other media companies is watching.
