Merch is moving from the closet to the living room.
Good morning everyone. I went to dinner at The Odeon last night and overheard several tables discussing One Direction member Liam Payne’s tragic death. I flipped my phone over halfway through the meal and had half a dozen friends texting me about it. A friend at dinner reminded me that One Direction was the “Closest music group people our age had to like, the Beatles, in their notoriety.” It’s unsettling when artists from our college and high school years pass away, a reminder of mortality or something.
Scheduled posts of Payne kept being uploaded to his social accounts after his death which was a reminder that many of our online lives are vastly different then our lived ones. Praying for Payne’s family and hope they can get the space they deserve. As
said this morning, “it’s hard to overstate One Direction’s impact on teen girls, fandom, and the internet as it exists today.”Today’s letter includes: Meta employees who were fired for using their lunch credit to buy wine glasses (must’ve been cheap glasses…), Hailey Bieber’s plans for rhode involve more merch and an older customer, and a “mystery luxury spa” opening on the West Side.
NEWS:
Now this is interesting. A few weeks ago, I wrote about Orchestra (PR titan Berlin Rosen’s holding company) because they were mentioned in Puck co-founder Jon Kelly’s announcement email about The Puck Private Conversation. It seems like the Berlin Rosen team is really cooking over there at Orchestra, because this morning it was announced that they acquired Small Girls PR — a great PR firm with a sadly antiquated name — in an eight-figure deal. I’m sure that will get amended.
What I want to know is:
What is Orchestra’s investment thesis?
What is the role they’re playing in Puck’s Private Conversation? I bet the data they get from that project will be able to inform the work they do across their whole portfolio (Small Girls has worked with clients like Hinge, Sweetgreen and Nutrafol).
Will Orchestra’s co-founder Jonathan Rosen answer the phone when I call him later today? :)
