Weirdly there was also a story in the NYT this morning about beekeepers in the Korean DMZ (the demilitarized zone between North and South Korea), which I thought was astoundingly niche, but maybe it's all part of a bigger trend
the LP x NB collab is...fine. maybe if more collabs were (unnecessarily) higher priced we'd have fewer of them. then again, kith exists so probably not!
Great news that being laid off has finally become cool as my employer sent an email offering buyouts last week and I think I’m about to be laid off for the third time 😂😅
Oh man wasn’t every rich hipster in brownstone brooklyn trying their hand at beekeeping 10 yrs ago or so? I remember there were some excellent meads to be sampled, Honey or Honey’s for instance 🖤🖤🖤
RE: gyms changing equipment…Sam Sulek is probably 90% responsible for getting Gen Z into lifting and specifically Planet Fitness. If they aren’t paying him they really ought to be. It doesn’t matter if he’s on gear, he’s clearly getting young impressionable people into PF not realizing they won’t get yoked like him.
Also want to go on record saying the worst pandemic purchases were Peloton bikes and I can’t believe how a phenomenon that was always going to be temporary seemed to lead top brass there to think people would want to keep riding a bike in their living room alone. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
There’s definitely a huge push in general, and I probably could have worded that better because what I meant to say was I think Sulek may be responsible for 90% of PF’s growth specifically, and probably just for guys (which is still a gross over-estimation but I do think it’s a lot). He has something like 6m ig followers, 2.5mil on TikTok, over 3mil on YouTube, and posts videos training at PF which was never really seen as a place for serious bodybuilding or weight training (cue Planet Fatness jokes). The price point of their memberships was always the main draw from what I can tell, but I think his followers see him turning them from the butt of jokes into somewhere that a Gen Z guy thinks will get them in superhuman shape. I’ve seen plenty of videos of fitness influencers recording content there as a gag, but Sulek seems earnest and his training location gives a lot of credibility to where he works out. PF becoming a “real” gym plus the affordable fees probably drives a ton of memberships there among men his age, at least until they realize the real gym for most male fitness influencers is a needle full of tren.
I would love that. I’m not into bodybuilding but his videos are interesting, he’s just zero frills, no clickbait but still grew a massive following.
He also thinks he may have been the inspiration for the Caniac at Raising Cane’s, and I would love for someone to get to the bottom of that. Another great collaboration opportunity lost.
Damn sorry for the comment bombs but this came out right after my coffee hit so I’m the most buzzed I’ll be all day- Dr. Mike Israetel from Renaissance Periodization might also be great to talk to about fitness. Incredibly intelligent but very down to clown.
We got a bike off Amazon for around $250 or something, and an iPad holder for another $20. When pandemic was over that thing hit the curb with a free sign, easy. Couldn’t imagine actually paying for a Peloton and then keeping it around because you paid so much but gyms have been open for years.
Yeah, I think only 10% of his audience are women. I’m very outside of what’s going on in women’s fitness influencers generally speaking because my wife (Borat voice) would be the last person on Earth to leave CrossFit unless there’s another death at the games so all I see her watch are women from that world.

Looks like his demo is mostly men, yeah?
Lauryn Bosstick (almost 2mm IG followers) also posted this recently about weight lifting recently: https://www.instagram.com/p/C8KZDNrJFj8/?hl=en&img_index=1
I'm not sure if there's one 90%-responsible source, seems like a lot of health and wellness influencers are pushing weights over cardio.

Now I need to interview this guy

the peloton stock journey was very, very fun. extremely obvious dud lol
I forgot what their high was…162. 158 point drop, too bad Brian Niccol only does food.
yep haha, peaked at 162 the day before christmas 2020. insane lol.

For women I feel like it really started with Kayla Itsines, and then Krissy Cela and Whitney Simmons. I’ve never heard of Sam Sulek

LP sneakers anticipated by this scene from Succession, Season One (clip is under a minute).

I came here to be the person who says that if Taylor's merch is anything like her relationships...
