Jamila Robinson former assistant managing editor for food and culture at The Philadelphia Inquirer, will be the next editor in chief of Bon Appétit. Robinson replaces Dawn Davis, a veteran of the book publishing world who in 2020 was tapped to take the reins at Bon Appétit as it grappled with criticisms of the treatment of people of color who worked there. BA’s longtime editor Adam Rapoport resigned abruptly in June 2020, after an old photo resurfaced online showing him dressed in a racially insensitive costume. I recently heard that he’s helping to edit my favorite travel resource, Yolo Journal, though I cannot confirm that. This job isn’t easy — if there’s one magazine category that is fractured right now, it’s food. BA is in a tough spot… food magazines are completely fractured by celebrity cooking content, and hot TikTokkers who come out of the woodwork and amass a cult audience. I will say their recent Test Kitchen series with Pierce Abernathy was appreciated by the magazine’s very outspoken audience (read the comments), but I’m going to need them to bring back some excellent restaurant reporting because Grub Street is really carrying the torch (?) there. Is that the phrase?
In other media news, Karlie Kloss might buy i-D magazine from Vice. God knows Vice needs some Kushner cash. I’m into this, I and I hope part of this project would include archiving past issues :) selfishly :) Kloss previously led a consortium of investors—including movie producer Jason Blum, Kaia Gerber, Lewis Hamilton, and Forerunner Ventures’ (and friend of Feed Me) Kirsten Green—who partnered with Bustle Digital Group to buy W magazine in 2020 from Marc Lotenberg, whose Twitter profile reads, “Business, with a side of controversy.” Cool guy.
69,000 applicants want to be Citadel’s next intern. If they get it, they make $19k a month. So Griffin’s lieutenants at Citadel are basically looking to groom the next generation of math and comp geniuses, assessed on everything, from their facial expressions to the length of their emails, to how they communicate with their seniors during company meals. When I was in college I heard of this kid who mixed wasabi with his soy sauce at a team omakase , and his boss at his Goldman internship freaked out on him and left the dinner.
