I think you'll regret using and writing about Zyn. The health consequences from smoking have more to do with cardio (as buried in the article) as they do with lungs. So the pace and volume at which you're taking in the drug is likely worse for you than that of cigarettes even though the method feels safer. Smoking looks cool at least.

The only "free lunch" I see is coffee.

At least there’s no secondhand Zyn. I moved to Stockholm a few months ago where snus (Zyn) is life and let me tell you the air is CLEAN. I grew up in Paris inhaling secondhand smoke from the tender age of, I don’t know, probably 2, so this is great for me.

I loved using Zyn, which was super helpful for focus (at first), but wearing a Whoop for a while ended it.

While using Zyn, every single day was ranked as 'high stress' based on my cardiovascular data.

After quitting, not even the most stressful day at work nudged my heart activity into the high-stress zone.

(On a side note, I remain curious about just how organic the social media memes around nicotine pouches really are...)

Tucker- We know he’d much rather be cranking out articles like a William Buckley or Gore Vidal. He has a soft spot for all the legacy men’s magazines.

Good reporting on a phenomenon that isn’t limited to a few neighborhoods in one city, but has really crossed all kinds of class lines and identities.

Tucker named his child Buckley!

I’ve accumulated enough Marlboro Miles, er, Zyn points to redeem a Nespresso maker.

Adding the "spas as third place" idea to my 2025 predictions board. It's only a matter of time before cities outside NYC catch on. Great reporting Emily!

I’m into it. Especially if more gyms start adding these features (sky ting and a few other places have)

It'll be interesting to see if any of those pitch decks you mentioned will pan out. I work in retail design, most of our wellness clients have offered the usual one-on-one spa services - maybe this will change?

Philly interloper here but Zahav > the Starr multiverse

Expand full comment

Zahav has never blown me away, but its also not a format that i'm super stoked about. It is definitely very good, in the sense of like...the food tastes good, but its not the restaurant experience i'm looking for.

I would generally agree anyway though, just because most of the Starr spots are kinda just fastballs down the middle. Parc is elite, in the Balthazarian sense - location, scene, service, environment, nothing on the menu is worse than above average.

It's also just a tough comparison, Zahav won a James Beard for most outstanding restaurant. in my restaurant list notes that i sent another user here, however, i pointed out that i like laserwolf more than zahav (which is probably a function of my first point made in this comment).

Expand full comment

Totally fair points. Haven't had any success getting into Laserwolf when in NYC and so many other options that I haven't tried as hard to jump through the requisite hoops.

Don't want to beat a dead horse as I have previously thrown some shade at Starr spots and the blind devotion of some here in DC despite the experiences being mid at best. Your analogy of fastballs down the middle resonates

Loved it. Fascinating to get a look behind the curtain and not surprised that the party was such a banger. Sounds like lots of pent up espresso martini and zyn fueled energy in there… can’t stop thinking about the floral perfumes and spray tans too

Me too... I'm going to pay attention to see if that trend creeps into New York restaurants and Ubers

I realize the Tucker reference in the article has more to do with his Zyn use and/or involvement in competing products but to pile on the douchebagginess... he leveraged the Hunter Biden laptop story and Nepo Baby assertions to fuel his audience growth but was admittedly a former "neighbor and friend" and had previously asked Hunter to help get HIS Nepo Baby into Georgetown. That Nepo Baby, Buckley Carlson, was just named Deputy Press Secretary for JD Vance. No irony here...

I would like someone to attempt to explain what taking Zyn (is that the correct verb?) feels like. I've asked the men in my life but they're useless.

Did you learn anything about prolonged use of Zyn? Are there any hesitations from you here in terms of chewing tobacco’s links to oral cancer?

Expand full comment

There’s no tobacco in zyn

And yeah you can mess up your gums with zyn, get addicted, look like an idiot, and get heart issues

Expand full comment

just curious, Emily were you a nicotine addict before you started using zyn?

Expand full comment

First of all I’m not an addict. Nah, I smoke or use zyn like once a week now

Expand full comment

yeah. because at my prevoius job we had a big tobbacco company for a client and they considered nicotine pouches a tobbaco harm reduction product, but then the marketing was aimed at teenagers. so the NPs create new users (and addicts) rather than to help cigarette smokers wean themselves off the nicotine.
