Good morning everyone. The day is here, my review of Frog Club. I had a reservation last night at 6:30, saw a shocking amount of familiar faces, and left with a lot of thoughts (and some photos).
But first, some
NEWS:
Men are hitting the spa, but they’re not calling it that. They’re saying they’re hitting the ice bath, or sauna, or hyperbaric oxygen chamber. In 2023, half of Remedy Place’s customers were Millennial men, representing a majority of its highest-spending customers with some shelling out $27,000 a year at the club. Although it declined to disclose revenue figures, business is brisk according to the company. In 2022, it raised a $5mm seed round. But in its first full year of operating two locations in Los Angeles’s WeHo and New York’s Flatiron neighborhoods, it booked over 64,000 reservations and crossed into profitability in 2023.
Primo Focaccia might be the new Wildair donut. Just kidding, but they are doing a lot of fun collaborations and pop-ups. The focaccia brand is having a pop-up at Caffè Panna (owned by Hallie Meyer, daughter of Danny) today from 1:30-6:30pm with speciality slices (pistachio cream, Calabrian sausage, maple thyme, taleggio fonduta) and a special sundae and an exclusive focaccia ice cream flavor. It's the first event in a series of pop ups at restaurants and bars around NYC this spring.
I had no idea there was a Hamptons version of Vanderpump Rules. But it’s coming back for Season 2. “Selling the Hamptons” will also be premiering soon. Who needs the crowded LIRR when you have this?
Yesterday, Sequoia Capital withdrew its days-old request that Klarna chairman and independent director (and former Sequoia partner) Mike Moritz depart from the board. This story is so funny. Instead, Sequoia partner Matt Miller will leave and be replaced by a different colleague. According to a letter obtained by The Information, the venture firm had some more conversations and learned more information and effectively changed its mind. According to a source close to Sequoia, the initial concerns related to making sure the company has the right board at it heads into getting ready for an IPO. Not the best look for Sequoia!!
Grub Street’s story about the best flour tortillas in the city feels important.
And while we’re on the topic of New York Magazine, I think this idea of “pop-up newsletters” that The Cut is doing is fun! A reader sent me this, and I think it’s smart that they’re having people opt-in to this coverage, as many people who read The Cut or New York Magazine probably don’t give a shit about Brittany and Kenneth (readers, I do).
The Big Four have been shedding staff to cut costs in recent months. Now they’re scrutinizing employee workloads and letting go of "underemployed" staff. Sources told The Times that EY and Deloitte were among the firms amping up inspections of workloads, especially time spent with clients.
I promise I’m almost done talking about the Rhode lip gloss phone case. But I just found out Shopify’s Design Director, Sam Sonntag, created it? He used to work at Glossier as a Brand Designer. Good find Emma.
I think the new SKIMS swim campaign is fun. It’s no Lana, but how could it be?
FROG CLUB (which I kept calling “Frog Bar” last night)
On the back of Frog Club’s dessert menu, there’s a bit of a manifesto including ”Frog Club is the New Yorkiest room in New York and it will leave you wondering, what happened at 86 Bedford last night?” So I will tell you.
THE ENTRANCE
When a restaurant has been open for 4 days, and already has a no photo rule, you have to wonder what they don’t want you photographing. If you guys think fashion gossip group texts are fun, you should see my hospitality world group chats this morning.
