Teach a woman to fish.
Boys, its finally time to put those fish photos in your Hinge profile again.
Good morning everyone. For anyone new here, Guest Lecture is a Feed Me series that captures the spirit of that (sometimes unhinged) guest lecturer who would come into your class on a Friday, drop more knowledge than you’d heard all semester, and then disappear.
For our next Guest Lecture, we’ll be interviewing Nikki Ogunnaike, the editor-in-chief of Marie Cliare magazine. Yesterday, I wrote about Marie Claire’s new digital beauty issue and I think it’s the perfect time to dig into Nikki's point of view on the current state of media.
I was listening to Nikki’s episode of
last week, and her hope for young people working in the media industry was refreshing. Today, paid readers can ask her anything about what she looks for in a writer, Marie Claire’s new focus on beauty, specifics about her career trajectory that got her where she is today,Teach a woman to fish 🐟
Last night, as I was scrolling on Instagram I saw a video from influencer Danielle Bernstein. The video featured a bikini-clad Bernstein posing in bikinis posting in what looked like a recreation of my dad’s garage – tackle boxes, canoe oars, a random steering wheel from a boat, and some fishing rods.

In January, Town & Country announced that the Fisherman Aesthetic would be “making a splash” in 2025. This is not to be confused with coastal grandma, quiet luxury or yacht girl – this aesthetic is literally about fish, nets, boats, and looking like you might get wet. Think about the photos that girls on vacation in Greece post of the octopus hanging on the line in the sun to dry, embodied. Pinterest also predicted that the maritime look would be big this summer, saying search terms for “Fisherman sandals” were up 30%, “fish bags” were up 50%, and sardine tattoos were up 80%.
I think this is a more grown-up take on the “Hot girls eat tinned fish” movement of 2022. A little less product (Fishwife) forward, and a lot cooler.
“Core” trends of summer’s past — coastal grandma and barbie summer and quiet luxury and balletcore and mermaidcore — never spoke to me. Actually, the Mob Wife thing made me feel something because I’m from Long Island and like hairspray. But the fisherman look is funny to me… because I’ve been using the same tackle box for 14 years:
