The Cut is printing their own magazine 📰
It will be separate from New York Magazine's regular issues.
Good morning everyone. I woke up feeling immensely grateful for all of you and this little media business you’ve helped me build. Last night, I had about 100 of my paid readers at Casetta. Wine was from the fabulous Las Jaras, and the whole party was made possible by Free People (who was also my first sponsor on Substack!). Jean’s let us throw a banger afterwards, and I am hearing from people texting me this morning that many numbers were exchanged both romantically and professionally. If I seemed nervous while speaking to any of you, it’s because it was, but I had a lot of fun and am not hungover! We’ll do something fun again soon, and once I get photos back from
A few things:
Rachel interviewed me for a story about finance guys becoming hot for The Washington Post. Corporate Fetish lives on.
Last night in the middle of the party, let me know that Feed Me is now the 10th-top business newsletter on the platform. We had a bet a few months back about how quickly it would happen, and I think he won.
On Sunday night, I started a conversation in the Feed Me Substack chat about the state of dating. I keep going back to the chat and reading what people shared, and I want to do something bigger on the findings but I’m not sure what. These were some of the standout responses:
“As someone who is very happy hanging out with myself I can tell you a lot of women feel the same way. Times have changed. We don’t need men to feel whole. We don’t need men and we are picky with who gets access to us and who we give our time too. On the other side of the coin I feel like men do not approach women anymore. Dating apps are for hook ups and there’s this invisible but palpable divide between the sexes that has become a new way of life. I honestly think men are just waiting for women to give them a very bright green light otherwise they just leave us be.”
“Half my close friends group divorced before turning 30 —it’s a real phenomenon.”
“I’ve been off the apps for two years now and only used them in my 30s so maybe my experience isn’t the right one for this kind of convo but my controversial take is that…i loved the apps and had a good time and met a lot of good people, some who have become close friends? Someone above mentioned young people having these extremely long detailed lists of specifics they MUST have to date someone and I think that’s a big part of the dating app issue no one wants to accept. There seems to be a lack of giving people grace. I went on A LOT of boring dates but in the end it’s like, okay I had two drinks and met someone new. It’s just part of the process.”
NEWS:
New York Magazine is printing a standalone issue for The Cut this fall. It will be sent to subscribers and also be available on newsstands. Earlier this year, New York and Vox Media announced an investment in the Cut (including four full-time staff) to expand its team and deepen its editorial coverage and social-media footprint. I think this print issue will be a really good experiment for their advertising team, buying in print is hot! Earlier this year, NYLON magazine brought back their print product, Byline is doing a great job of printing issues, and clearly Interview is doing something right.
New York City hotel news:
The Four Seasons in midtown is reopening later this year. I hear from friends working on the project that it is going to have the best spa in the whole city, a fantastic high tea service, and that the opening party is going to be ridiculously star-studded (think big). The hotel has been closed since the onset of the pandemic in March 2020, though doctors were allowed to stay at the property in the harrowing early days of the scourge. The hotel planned its reopening in the spring of 2022, but the dispute put the kibosh on that as the rest of Manhattan’s hospitality properties roared back to life. Ty Warner, founder of Beanie Babies, purchased the property in 1999 for $275mm, seven years after it opened. The development of the 368-room property cost $475 million.
Starwood Capital Group is nearing a deal to sell the 1 Hotel Central Park. I’ve still never been inside that building. I’ve only stayed at the 1 in Miami and my room was outside the elevator which was infuriating. Anyway, Starwood sought more than $1 million per room for the property in a 2016 effort that did not lead to a sale. The hotel has about 230 rooms. “The deal isn’t final and could still fall through,” said people familiar with the matter, which is never an awesome quote to have in Bloomberg.
The Abu Dhabi Investment Authority is looking to sell its New York Edition Hotel at 5 Madison Avenue for $271mm. I love this building, the clock tower is so beautiful.
And I heard last night that The Standard is trying to revitalize their party scene.
I’m just as concerned as the people in Glossier’s Instagram comments about the packaging on their lip color. Two of my bags have fallen victim to faulty Ultralip caps. However, these new hair accessories are super cute. Brings back visceral memories of the always-broken Man Repeller clip, which frankly belongs in a museum preserving 2018 cultural relics…
