It makes me sick to read about immigration quotas. What makes me most sick is these people don't have a moral objection to immigration, to those who are undocumented. Under the guise of "protecting Americans," "putting Americans first," and "asking people to follow the law" is nothing more than a big fat $.
From a recent Forbes article that is actually good:
--
When Trump was declared the projected winner of the 2024 presidential election, the stock price of Geo Group and CoreCivic, two of the largest for-profit operators of prisons and immigration detention centers in the U.S., shot up 74% and 55% respectively. Shortly after the election, during CoreCivic’s quarterly earnings conference call with its investors, its president and chief operating officer, Damon Hininger, commented on the election results:
“First, I want to just give a few observations on the state side and then talk a little bit about the federal side. But let me just first say I've had the good fortune to be with the company well over 32 years. We have seen during that period of time significant events during that history where elections have kind of changed the course on policy and sentiment on certain issues. And it feels like with the election this year, we're heading into an era that we really haven’t seen, maybe only once or twice in the company's history, where the value proposition of the private sector for both our state partners and our federal partners are going to be not only strong today but even stronger as we go into the next couple of years. So, I want to start with that.”
I do not believe there is an idealistic element to the mind-boggling increase in raids and deportations. Any materialist glance shows a system in which a handful of companies successfully lobbied for a second Trump presidency in hopes of monopolizing/profiting off government contracts with no regard for the material effects this has on people's lives.
I think all people, but New Yorkers especially, need to really reflect on the role of immigration in this brilliant city and how these changes are going to not only threaten a place we love and enjoy, but have dire consequences for hundreds of thousands of people just trying to make a life here like the rest of us–all so that a handful of already rich people can get richer.
Thank you for sharing, I don’t read Forbes much sometimes they have really excellent reporting so I’m glad you surfaced. These people are so outrageously dangerous… I want to know how the ICE agents in New York sleep at night knowing these people are part of the fabric of the city. Their neighbors essentially
I am pretty obsessed with Brian Johnson, but in a low-key way (I don't follow him on any platform, but if I see his content I'll usually watch...). In this era of great grifters, he is my favorite grifter. I love how he is obsessed with his boners and yet, seems entirely uninterested in using them... Incredible! I don't get his haters... let him do his thing. FWIW, I think Mel looks better? Brian Johnson has crossed into uncanny valley territory. He looks like when they put make up on corpses for open casket funerals. But I support his efforts... boys with toys!
I did read a Reddit thread that investigated how his supplements don't have what they say in them... which sounds about right. Last summer, in a moment of "why the hell not?" I bought his cocoa powder. It tastes like shit. Probably the worst I've had. I need to figure out what to do with it.
Do you think when the cameras are off and his phone is out of his hand and he’s alone in his weird mansion he really believes himself? And follows all his self-imposed rules?
Mel looks amaze and I know that man drinks and eats pasta
I think what I find so fascinating about him is he seems to really believe his own bullshit. But he must have some doubts... We will probably never know so long as he stands to make money from the grift.
The other thing that Mel has, aside from looking human, is the natural aura of someone who enjoys life. I feel like deep down we know there is something inherently off about optimization. It's just not sexy. It's bad for the spirit. Gwyneth has always been correct about the balance of cigarettes and tofu. Every moment we are actually closer to death, even Mr. Johnson. Relishing time is hotter than obsessing over whether you can stop it.
I watched a Youtube video on Johnson that made the convincing argument that this is the very public emotional purging of a man who lost his faith in the LDS church but never properly deconstructed and now is terrified of death and has no secular way to process that fear except through spending his money on pretty much any cockamamie idea someone can sell him on.
Came here to say that I saw your sheets and instantly wanted to know where they were from and if they were Brooklinen, to which I have a mild addiction. I was fairly sure I recognized that Luxe Sateen sheen. (I *love* linens and feel like the easiest and most affordable luxury is having extra sheets and towels so you can always have fresh, clean options.)
My problem now is that I have TOO many blankets and sheets and towels because I love them all... and I'm hoping my next apartment has more linen space. And a second bedroom lol
I thought a blanket ladder would fix my blanket hoarding but I have a good collection of Pendleton wool blankets which are so bulky they just look dumb on my dumb little ladder.
Prioritize sleep! My husband is a neuroscientist working on alzheimer’s and dementia and outside of genetics and taking care of things like blood pressure…exercise and sleep are the most important things to stave off dementia. it’s not sudoku.
We also sleep on Brooklinen sheets, for what it’s worth. 😉
sb nation 2014-2019ish helped me fall in love with sports. would love to see them do that for women’s sports but unless the way their management treats that business has changed, it seems unlikely. used to be mandatory reading 🥲
Surprised you didn’t mention the Babylist sponcon in the AD/Alison Roman piece… I’m not mad at it but Babylist sponsoring her nursery and AD running it as edit with affiliate links is a thing.
When I first moved into my apartment (5 years ago) I ordered sheets, pillows, and towels from Brooklinen, Parachute, and Snowe and conducted a very nonscientific completely subjective comparative analysis. Brooklinen won the towels. They are so fluffy!!! They just started kinda dying and I need to order new ones.
just to say I swear I read each email, but feel like I didn't know you were engaged?! congrats! also want to say that, as a lawyer, the "when my eyes are open, I'm working" philosophy is both relatable and ultimately unsustainable. it's incredibly healthy and affirming to hear someone else say, "wait, maybe I don't want/need/prefer to live that way."
FWIW the Giggly Squad tour dwarfs Jake’s tour and the Unwell tour - it’s about 60 cities and over 100 shows with a number of blue chip sponsorships 😌 giving them their 💐
Friend (and neighbor) of mine (IG: @joellegrace) had that shoot with Alex C last month. From what I hear, the vibes were awesome! And she’s available to shoot other rising media moguls ! 🐍👀
also re “when my eyes are open, I’m working” - I feel like this is especially true if your work entails covering culture or building social products/experiences because then every social interaction you have becomes ‘research’ as much as you might be trying to disconnect. i’ve def felt this way lately
"When my eyes are open, I'm working" is too real. I built a business that I've been running for about a decade and added a second one last year, and I feel that in my core. For the first time in a decade, I'm about to go on a trip in February where I will actually not do any work, and it's a terrifying and liberating thought. Rest and relaxation are elusive, but if you figure out the secret sauce I hope you report it back here.
I had been saying that this year I intend to be more selfish with my time and energy, but I think that word has too negative of a connotation, so I've shifted toward self-ful. Definitely using data to make better decisions to only say yes to things that feed my soul or benefit me professionally, personally, or financially, but still (always) learning.
Iceland! For a whole week! It's gonna be cold AF but we're going to snorkel between two tectonic plates, check out some volcanoes, and hopefully bask in the glory of the northern lights. And I may have just ordered a new set of sheets to come home to...
curious to know what the dynamics in the briefing room will be like between the heavy hitters of traditional media and new outlets. also wondering what directions the questions asked will take, and if there will be any regulation on that

Oh and Barefoot Dreams blankets. The linen closet is *crammed.*

I can look into this
Kule x Brooklinen collab goes insanely hard
im never leaving this robe

I did not see that!

Their team is going to love this comment section
Maybe their team wants to drop a lil discount code 👀
I’m on it 🫡

Thank you 💋 💍

I'm new to them but super interested -- have been listening to the pod over the last few weeks. Have you been to their shows?
A few! Went to Radio City (they sold it out twice). Girls in the boys bathrooms. It was fun
Friend (and neighbor) of mine (IG: @joellegrace) had that shoot with Alex C last month. From what I hear, the vibes were awesome! And she’s available to shoot other rising media moguls ! 🐍👀
I was told today by another publication that it’s time I get a professional headshot…

I really love my job so I don’t resent it, but I prob shouldn’t have gone to a 9:30 pm dinner on Saturday
According to BoF, Chanel just cut 70 jobs from the US, I'm assuming they might create special beauty experiences in their other NYC boutiques.
Need Lauren Sherman on the case…

There’s no secret sauce so far lol, avoid using the word burnout and try to use data to make better decisions

Jessssss built different. Where are you going on your vacanza?

Legendary, report back

Wanted to go the Chanel beauty atelier for a while now. Sad.
It was really lovely. I'm curious if they're working on a new full-spa situation
I think is part of their new soho store renovation ( maybe not a spa but the atelier)
It was so fun! There's a Chanel Beauty Williamsburg but it's not the same.
comment section real quiet
I don't think one needs to step it up in order to be a Bryan Johnson hater? That's my other big takeaway today.
I don't know if he has any other direction for people besides step it up
I’ve been off my game on vacation. Will be back with my best commentary tomorrow 🫡
